In the last five years or so, the obsession over the perfect, awe-inspiring, Pinterest-worthy wedding details has left all our heads spinning. Now, let me be clear, I love super hipster-awesome details as much as the next guy. Those totally rad wedding favors that you made 500 of? I usually get to take about 3 of them home with me at the end of the night because the vast majority of guests walk right past that table and leave empty handed. My wife and kids thank you for the jelly beans, rock candy, and coffee… and I was a big fan of the homemade apple moonshine from a few years back! So, I’m not knocking details… promise!
Unfortunately, because most wedding blogs exist only to provide you with inspiration for details, I really think that couples don’t often see that a photographer can capture so much more than your wedding stationary, perfectly placed on repurposed wood with fresh flower pedals in just the right spots. There are details about your day that are far more important than the Etsy purchases you made for the wedding. These are the details that no one will ever be able to replicate. They won’t get pinned on Pinterest, and even if they were, you would drive another photographer absolutely mad if you forced them to “try to get this shot”. These details tell your story, and only your story… and let me be very clear, there is absolutely no way to force these shots. They can’t be planned for or placed on a shot list you give to your photographer along with the family formal photos you want. It is for this very reason that it is so important that you select a photographer whose work you absolutely love and who you can trust to tell your story without providing them a Pinterest board to work from.

So to reflect back on this past year, I want to do something a little different and share some of my favorite details from 2013 weddings. Yes… details. Not a single image in this post was posed or requested. These moments naturally occurred and most likely were completely off the bride and groom’s radar. I’m so lucky that my wonderful clients give me the breathing room that I need to capture these special moments for them to look back on.
My hope is that you will realize that every wedding is a story full of details. You don’t have to spend a single penny on Etsy or moment on Pinterest for your wedding to be spectacular.
